In today’s world, with industrial advancement and increased production, air pollution has become one of the most important environmental challenges. Industrial suspended particles and pollutants not only threaten workers’ health but also cause irreversible damage to the environment. In this context, the use of industrial dust collectors, particularly bag filters, has emerged as an effective solution to reduce these pollutants. This article examines the performance and importance of these devices in maintaining both workplace health and environmental protection.

How does a dust collector or Bag Filter work?

As mentioned, the presence of an industrial dust collector is extremely important and significant for a factory or industrial unit. This device is primarily designed and built to protect workers in the factory from breathing polluted air, and secondarily to prevent the release of contaminated particles into nature and the environment.

If the design and construction of the dust collector are done with correct calculations, proper estimates, and the use of appropriate components during manufacturing, it can be said that the industrial unit will be free from any pollutants.

The first and most important factor in selecting a dust collector is its capacity, or in other words, the air flow rate and suction power for air carrying pollutant particles. This air flow rate and suction power of the dust collector are calculated and determined based on the type of industrial activity, the type of pollutants, the size of suspended particles, etc.

The second determining factor in selecting a dust collector is identifying the number and configuration of pollution sources – or what we call emission points – in the industrial unit or factory. In industrial dust collection processes, dust and suspended particles are suctioned through ducts from points closest to their generation sources, preventing their dispersion into the environment.

In industrial dust collection processes, there are many other influential factors that we will try to address in future articles, providing more comprehensive and specialized explanations. For now, we will limit ourselves to explaining from what perspective dust collection systems are designed.

What are industrial dust collectors?

Industrial dust collectors, or what we call Bag Filter devices, are systems that:
Suction dust-laden air using an air suction device (fan)
Pass the air through separation barriers (which we will henceforth call filter bags)
Separate (filter) the dust particles carried in the suctioned air
Discharge clean air free of suspended particles outside the work environmentIn simple terms, this process is called air purification or air filtration.

The difference between industrial ventilation and residential air conditioning ventilation

In many cases, the air purification process is similar to residential air conditioning ventilation, but there are also many differences. Apart from the technical calculation differences in both categories, there are also many differences in the operational process.

In residential air conditioning ventilation, the air suctioned by the air conditioning device is returned to the ventilated space after dust removal. However, in industrial air purification, the suctioned air is not returned to the work space, because returning the air inside causes dispersion and turbulence of the air being suctioned and disrupts the dust suction process.

In the air conditioning process, the ventilation speed must be such that it creates comfortable conditions and produces minimal turbulence in the environment – meaning the ventilation process should appear somewhat imperceptible. However, in the air purification process, the suction speed is much higher compared to air conditioning because the generated dust particles have larger volume and greater weight. Therefore, to prevent further particle dispersion and enable faster transfer of these particles, higher suction speeds must be applied in the system. In the air purification process, the imperceptibility of the process is not an important requirement.

Why does a factory or industrial unit need a dust collector?

There are many reasons for implementing a filtration system in an industrial unit:
Protecting the health of personnel working in that industrial unit
Recycling collected dust from the filtration process in some industries or selling it as industrial waste
Preventing pollution from spreading to residential areas near industrial units
Improving equipment efficiency and preventing damage caused by production dust to other equipment in the production unit
Preserving environmental health and preventing damage caused by industrial unit dust to the environment.

How to choose the best dust collector?

The selection of a dust collector first depends on the type of activity or industry. The second step is consulting with experts in this field, because if this system is not selected and implemented accurately and practically, it will impose higher costs on the industrial unit.

Finally, maintenance, care of the dust collector and servicing of components will have significant impact on improving performance and proper dust collection.
